Ethernet card?

Just received delivery of my High-Speed modem today. Instructions states
connect yellow wire to Ethernet Card. I don't got no card like dat! I found
it on a Google search and it explained it but not so's I understand it. What
is it, why do I need it? I thank you.

The two main ways to connect with the Internet
are Dial-UP = phone line, and
Ethernet = broadband cable or wireless.
Most PCs for the last decade have had Ethernet
built into the main board, identifiable by its
rear-panel socket, like an oversize phone socket.
You can buy a separate Ethernet card with the
appropriate socket to connect your HS modem.

if your computer is very old so it don't have any network connector
built in directly, and don't allready have a network card (allso called
"Ethernet Card", "NIC" or "LAN adaptor") you can buy a new network card.
They don't cost very much (probably 1/4 of your new adsl/cable-modem),
and you can install it yourself by open your computer and finding
a unused pci slot. a small guide how to install it is on
http://www.dur.ac.uk/its/services/network/lan/install_network_card/

(if you instead have a laptop computer, you should just insert
a pc-card network card into your pc-card slot. Back then when computers
didn't have network connectors allready, they called pc-card "pcmcia")

Chances are though that your computer allready have what you need,
search on the back of your computer for a square-looking network jack...
Here is an image of how a network card looks like:
http://studynotes.net/images/network-card-led.jpg
and the black squarish hole to the right of the two LEDs (that
the image is describing) is what you are looking for....

> What is it, why do I need it? I thank you.

it is the computer hardware that handles network communications
with other computers and other network equipment like a
router/firewall and your new modem, so yes you need it.

Your old 56kbit modem (or slower?) didn't need it because it
was connected to an old slow 'serial port' instead.

Hope this helps....

You're not ready for the internet.

Nobody (who is running win-98 at this point) can be that stupid to not
know what an ethernet interface / cable / card is.

Thanks everyone for your help. I went through multitudes of Google sites,
too technical and not explained simplistically as it was here. Until now I
had no need for an Ethernet Card therefor I lacked that knowledge but I
reckoned correctly that the people on this NG did and I appreciate the
wisdom shared.

Where did I speculate about the age, country, or financial situation
of the boob known as Sudy Nim?

I know that Sudy nim is either a boob, or is trying to pull our leg by
appearing to be very dumb:

Let's try a google search for Ethernet Card:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&lr=&q=Ethernet+Card&btnG=Search

First two hits are Intel and Dell (paid placements - sales-related).

Third hit is also e-commerce (dealtime).

Fourth hit is Wikipedia entry for "network card". The very first
sentence is this:

"A network card, network adapter or NIC (network interface
card) is a piece of computer hardware designed to allow
computers to communicate over a computer network. "

> I found it on a Google search and it explained it but not

So our friend nim, who is familiar enough with hardware to modify the
region codes for DVD players, and who is web-savvy enough to know
where to find key-gens, this nim, who had no idea what an ethernet or
network card is, was not able to find an explanation that he was able
to understand?

Not even from the fourth google hit?

> ... it explained it but not so's I understand it.

This is directed specifically to you 98 Guy!

OK, I said I found that Google stuff and my question still remains, > What
is it, why do I need it? I read that entire page of technical jargon and
understood little. My question was about Ethernet Card. What is that network
stuff? Please explain! Don Phillipson, teebo and MEB took no offence and
simply helped me by answering my questions. They were legitimate but I see
now not to everyone.

When I need w98 information I simply turn to this NG. I "think" I understand
you and get your point. In the future to avoid your wrath I should send my
question to you for censuring and "98 Guy" approval?

OK, so I now have the answer (no thanks to you) and I was able to go to
BestBuy this morning and purchase what I think I can use. If I have a
problem maybe I will once more just post it here and prepare for your
attack.

I have many faults, one big one is that I do not know everything and I will
not hesitate to ask for help when needed.

The simple fact that I am on the Internet using a computer testifies that I
understand, read and write English demonstrating some level of intelligence.
It disavows your statement that I am "Stupid" or a Boob" for which I suggest
you offer up a personal apology posted to me here on this thread.

Some levity begets ridicule! You make me believe that you wish to
demonstrate your superiority, as you jumped at the chance to attack me but
you avoided answering the questions. How convenient! A forum for the world
to see but only through the eyes of - 98 Guy?

Slander is a "slippery slope" and your off handed statement never trumps my
right to request a repudiation of that smear. Be aware that based upon the
circumstances I am accomplished in blaspheme. The gauntlet is on the ground,
pick it up and let the joust begin - to the death or your apology!

This is the Internet, you can run but you can't hide. That's a conundrum!

What part of this did you not understand:

"A network card, network adapter or NIC (network interface
card) is a piece of computer hardware designed to allow
computers to communicate over a computer network. "

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Network_card

There is even a picture of the damn thing.

> why do I need it?

Have you NEVER heard of something called a computer NETWORK?

Are you not aware that for the past 20-odd years, that (personal)
computers are able to send data and messages to each other over a
NETWORK?

> My question was about Ethernet Card. What is that network stuff?

Your question makes as much sense as asking "What is a keyboard" or
"what is this stuff called Monitor and Display".

> Don Phillipson, teebo and MEB took no offence and simply helped

If they answered your questions, then why are you still asking me?

(I'm sure MEB liked answering questions posed by a key-gen user!)

> When I need w98 information I simply turn to this NG.

That's nice, but asking such a broad question (what is a network card)
does not pertain in any way to Windows-98.

> In the future to avoid your wrath I should send my
> question to you for censuring and "98 Guy" approval?

In the future, don't ask stupid questions. If you really did a google
search for NETWORK CARD then I showed how a very basic (and
understandable) answer was shown in the fourth result.

> Slander is a "slippery slope"

Oh gawd, - another lawyer.

> Be aware that based upon the circumstances I am accomplished

No doubt you have a degree in Blaspheme from a community college.

To my knowledge, I've never been considered a God before. So
blaspheme away.

Others have tried - and failed. You amuse me (for the moment).

And you can hide.

You can hide 98 Guy but we will find you and it is just a matter of time. If
you use the Internet then you can only try to hide for a while and then you
will be found. MEB is right about you and now I am convinced you are another

Thanks, I have contacted Microsoft and they will contact the authorities.
This case will be solved in time. Enjoy the rest of your week and I remember
you posting in the past and you were nice --- It is a shame that another
person would hide behind the person I knew who used to test Windows 2000
Internet Explorer patches for Windows 98 Second Edition. It was just a
matter of time and seeing that this person is not the same individual who
used to post. In case the real 98 Guy as I call the poster who used to post
ever returns then I did not want him to spoil the real 98 Guy's name. I
dealt with identity theft of my social security card in a home burglary in
2005 in Tucson, Arizona, U.S.A. and recently have dealt with fraudulent
stealing of my business identity in New Mexico, U.S.A. I did indeed start
with computers back in about 1984 with my first big adventure game being
King's Quest 1 on a 5.25 black inch floppy disk for my IBM PCjr which I still
have and it still runs! I started my love of computers back then also and it
has been thanks to people like Gary S. Terhune, MVP, Chris Quirke, MVP, PCR
and others that I so enjoy computing.
