Windows 8 failed updates

i bought a laptop in 2015 and set up automatic updates. It’s always been slow, so today i decided to restore to factory settings. When i checked update history, it says ‘updates failed’ for the last three years. It wont update when i go to settings, and gives an error message when i try to restore. I’m in gridlock!
