Hi everyone
So I'm a film student who has been looking for efficient ways to manage my media files for a few years now, and love the idea of Storage Spaces. I've been experimenting with many different setups, with success most of the time, but recently there was one home server build which really left me pulling my hair out.
In short, the problem is that I have just created a new tiered storage space, and it works very well during the first ~240GB or so of data being written to it, saturating my 1Gbit connection fully. However, immediately after that 240GB mark, it suddenly becomes unstable. There seems to be a pattern the madness, and I can see it copy the data in bursts.
My specs are as follows:
- Intel Core i3 6100
-8GB RAM
-Fujitsu 120GB SSD for OS
-2x ADATA SU650 480GB SSD Mirrored SSD Tier
-8x WD RE4 2TB Enterprise HDD Mirrored HDD Tier
-SuperMicro C7C232-CB-ML Motherboard
I understand that the system seems very underpowered for a server, but whilst the initial 240GB is being copied, I do not see anything eating up the CPU or RAM, leading me to believe that this is not an issue with the hardware capabilities.
Even when the problem occurs, the task manager does not show any unusual activity in the hardware.
Could this be Windows Server detecting that my SSDs are starting to be filled, and starting to destage the data to the HDDs?
It doesn't make sense to me because those SSDs are 480GB in capacity, and that the problem occurs specifically near the 240GB data range.
I'm hoping a professional could answer my questions. I'd be happy to provide more reports/screenshots if needed. Thank you all!
