Windows 2012 R2 - Disks converted to GPT but "ghost" partitions remain

S

StewartHyde

A Windows 2012 R2 server with 3 physical disks.

Disk 0 Contains OS

Disk 1 contains single volume (M:)

Disk 2 contains single volume (W:)

Disk 1 and 2 were converted from MBR to GPT

We now get 2 "ghost" volumes in disk management (no drive letters) that can be deleted but keep coming back.

Diskpart output is as follows:

DISKPART> list volume

Volume ### Ltr Label Fs Type Size Status Info
---------- --- ----------- ----- ---------- ------- --------- --------
Volume 0 Z DVD-ROM 0 B No Media
Volume 1 System Rese NTFS Partition 350 MB Healthy System
Volume 2 C OS NTFS Partition 39 GB Healthy Boot
Volume 3 M APPS/DATA NTFS Partition 49 GB Healthy
Volume 4 W SWAP NTFS Partition 17 GB Healthy Pagefile

DISKPART> select disk 1

Disk 1 is now the selected disk.

DISKPART> list partition

Partition ### Type Size Offset
------------- ---------------- ------- -------
Partition 3 Unknown 256 KB 1041 KB
Partition 1 Reserved 30 MB 1297 KB
Partition 2 Primary 49 GB 33 MB

DISKPART> select disk 2

Disk 2 is now the selected disk.

DISKPART> list partition

Partition ### Type Size Offset
------------- ---------------- ------- -------
Partition 3 Unknown 256 KB 1041 KB
Partition 1 Reserved 126 MB 1297 KB
Partition 2 Primary 17 GB 129 MB

I can delete the unknown partitions using disk manager or diskpart but after a couple of hours they come back and disk manager shows two unknown volumes again.

Anyone any ideas please?
