Proper way to change Server administrator password

I have server 2012R2 std as DC and server2012R2 Data center as host for Hyper-V systems. I want to strengthen the passwords and want to know the proper process steps. I changed the password at the DC and it said needed to logoff/on for it to take. Tried that and it presented a different Logon name. So I reverted back to the old PW and it took.


I think I need to change the PW with the server shut down, then boot and use new PW. Am I correct?
