New Server 2016 Domain - getting rid of traditional File Server

Hi. I'm starting afresh at a client site and really want to do things the "correct" way. Brand new Server 2016 with Essentials experience installed. They're moving from SBS 2011, and Exchange 2010 is going off to the cloud.

My question is, that in this so-called "hybrid" world we live in, which is the best method to still allow local clients a file-server experience (and take advantage of local backups), but give roaming clients the functionality that Office 365/OneDrive/Sharepoint Online provides?

I don't want to separate "experiences" dependent on whether your local or on the move. My ultimate question really boils down to, "Why can't OneDrive run as a service on the Server, so I get local network-share file access via Sharepoint Online, but also seamless access and real-time synchronisation with OneDrive Mobile Apps"?

Surely this is what everyone wants, right? To edit a file at their PC on a network share in the office, then that file to seamlessly appear on their One Drive app on their mobile when they're out and about?

Am I being dumb? Does MS actually provide this out of the box?

Many thanks,

Doug.
