HDMI "not plugged in" under Windows 10

Hello,


Just got a new computer and monitor. The built-in monitor speakers do not work when it is hooked up by HDMI; according to the Windows sound set up, it's "not plugged in" (though it obviously is, since the display is working fine).


I have tried upgrading the monitor drivers (for ASUS VA32AQ), but that didn't help (more precisely, it wasn't possible to install the driver from the ASUS website). Not sure about the video card, because I'm not sure I've found it in Device Manager; there are two generic "High definition audio device" entries under "Sound, video and game controllers", and I used the automatic update on their drivers with no effect.


A quick tour of the internet suggests a lot of people have had similar problems, but the range of suggested solutions is just mind-boggling. This should not be so tricky! What ever happened to PnP??
