Games no longer launch. Error code 0xc0000005

Hello all.

I have been struggling with this issue for almost a year, and at one point gave up gaming for a few months on this computer before tackling the issue again.

At it's core, the issue is that 90% of games that I try to play crash before they launch. Games of this nature include:

  • Spec Ops: The Line
  • Sonic Generations
  • Nier Automata

What's interesting is that some games launch and work perfectly. These include:

  • Tomb Raider (2013 & 2015)
  • NBA 2K16

I have performed the following troubleshooting steps:

  1. Uninstalled/reinstalled the games with issues
  2. Uninstalled/reinstalled Steam
  3. Ran a repair on DirectX (from the redistributable folder in the game)
  4. Uninstalled/reinstalled ALL Visual C++ Redistributable libraries on my computer (2005, 2008, 2012, 2015)
  5. Ran sfc /scannow
  6. Ran memtest and the Windows Memory Diagnostic tool
  7. Reinstalled Windows 10 (at each installation attempt, I have installed only Steam and Sonic Generations. No additional software installed)

At this point, I gave up. It wasn't until later that I tried installing SteamOS, and all of the games that could run on that OS worked! I also installed Windows 7, and encountered no issues at all.

Recently I reinstalled Windows 10, hoping that my issue would be resolved finally in a recent update. This reinstall happened in July 2018. Games appeared to be working again! It wasn't until last week when I tried to play Spec Ops that I encountered this issue again, and I have not been able to resolve it since.

I am open to all suggestions, and will not shy away from any technical work. My previous job I worked as a desktop support technician, and I currently run a VM cluster at home for hobby purposes.

Here is a sample of the error I get when running Spec Ops:

A high level of my PC specs are:

CPU: Intel i5-6500

Motherboard: GA-H170N

RAM: Ripjaws V 16GB

Storage: Samsung 850 EVO M.2-2280

Video Card: Nvidia 1070

OS: Windows 10 (Build 17134.228)

I'm looking for any and all suggestions on how to resolve this issue, as it has been a thorn in my side for a long time. I have a suspicion since some games work, and others don't, that it might have to do with certian requirements these games have. If it's a C++ Redistributable, or DirectX version, not sure. Just throwing a thought out there.

Thank you to everyone in advance!
