First lets try:
Start>Settings>Control Panel
when that opens double click on System.
When that opens, there are 4 tabs: General,Device Manager, Hardware
Profiles, Performance.
Click on Device manager and make "view devices by type" is selected.
Down the list you should see Sound, Video and Game controllers. double click
or click the +
Your soundcard hardware should be listed there, you can double click these
entries to get statuses of each item, telling if they are function and/or
disabled. etc.

If you don't see anything for sound setups, you may have missing/incorrect
drivers or the hardware is not installed or broken.

This will get you all the info you need about what's installed in your machine.
Everest Home Edition: (Last one offered free)
http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads9.html

Everest does not get installed, it runs as a standalone app.
Create a new folder named Everest and extract the contents of the download to

that folder.

Open the folder and double-click everest.exe to run the application.
