PKI template and Re enrollment

I am going to be migrating to a new PKI environment with a new Root CA. My question is around the template re enrollment process. Once I move the template over to the new server and I select the re enroll all certificate holders, how can I make sure the existing certificates are not deleted? Right now when I test, it works but the existing certificate gets deleted. the template option to delete existing is grayed out and not selected.
