I have a Lenovo ideapad 310 laptop with dual OS - Windows 8 and Ubuntu. I purchased my laptop with Windows 8 preinstalled on April 2017. And installed Ubuntu shortly after that.
Last Friday, I clicked update and shutdown. There was no issue before updating. Next day, when I tried to boot to Windows it showed error as End Entire...etc I googled the error and figured out it as due to Secure boot being enabled and went to system setup and disabled Secure boot. Now the old error is gone. It enters Windows and there is a blue screen with error message as follows:
Recovery
Your PC/Device needs to be repaired. The digital signature for this file couldn't be verified.
Error code : 0xc0000428
You will need to use recovery tools, if you don't have any installation media (like a disc or USB device) contact your PC administrator or PC/Device manufacturer.
Press F1 to enter recovery environment.
Press Esc for UEFI firmware Settings.
I googled the error code. Some youtube videos said, this can be because the date is wrong in the system. The date in my Windows won't update automatically when I am using Ubuntu. So, it is always wrong. After sometime I got tired of changing it every-time I log in. So, I knew the date in my Windows screen was wrong. So, I went to system Setup but the date was correct there. The time was two hours off. I corrected it. Still no improvement. I was getting the same error again.
After reading the answers to related questions in this community, I understood entering Recovery environment and trying Automatic Repair is a possible solution. But the problem is, if I press F1 from my laptop keyboard, nothing happens at all. If I press Esc it goes to System Setup. Pressing Fn+F1 just restarts the laptop. I tried pressing all function keys one by one, also Fn+each function key. Nothing happened.
Our IT Department sir, told me the only option is to back up the files and reinstall windows. I have some very important Data saved in the drive. I am not able to access these drives from Ubuntu, after this error occurred. I do not have a backup. Our sir has Windows 10 installation disc. I do not have any Windows 8 disc or USB.
How I can enter Recovery Environment ?
Is there an alternative solution possible without losing the data stored?
Also, why did this problem occur and what can I do to avoid such issues in the future ( I cannot ignore updating right? ) ?
