Printing problems for my HP laptop

I keep getting a "print to file" in a pop up box labeled "Output file" as well as box behind which states file is printing when I send a file to print. I have an HP Pavilion laptop and the operating system is Vista professional 32 bit. This happened about a year and a half ago with a latest update. I have tried to label the file and then send but the job never prints. My printer shows on line on my laptop. Any ideas as to what I can due to resume printing>
