Norton on Vista

M

Mick M

d have just started to use Vista and each time I switch on a box comes up
telling I should use Norton. I don't want Norton and its reminders and would
like to remove it from my system but cannot see how to do it.

Would someone out there please advise me?

Many thanks in advance.

You can uninstall Norton if your not going to use it ever
or use Windows defender to disable it from
startup.
Windows Defender | Tools | Software Explorer.

Go to Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel.
If there are problems, Norton has a tool available to help remove
whatever may be left.
However Norton products are notorious for being difficult to
completely remove as well as leaving components behind.
A few of the many reasons many will not touch anything
Norton/Symantec.

The above is a link to Symantec's Norton Removal Tool.

Sometimes there is an uninstall on the Norton program in your Start>All
Programs> norton Security Centre> sub menu

Make sure that you disable Norton before trying to uninstall it.

The seller of your computer put it on under the reciprocal contract
arrangement. Go Control Panel/Programs and Features to remove it.

There is no Add/Remove in Vista. Its called Programs and Features now.

Or simply "Programs" if the normal view is used.and then "Uninstall a

"Norton" anti-virus?
"Norton" WinDoctor?
"Norton" DiskDoctor?
"Norton" who-knows-whatisit?

"Norton" covers a *lot*. Kindly _specify_ what you are refering to, when
chatting about "Norton".

There was a time when Peter Norton wrote good software. Once he associated
with Semantic, he went downhill fast. Today, hi anti-virus program IS a
virus. Anyone that says otherwise is a liar. It is far worse than Windows
ME for running apps without telling you. If you want a real anti-virus or
anti-malware program, try AVG. They have a free version and AVG has won
several awards for finding new undocumented virus 100% of the time with zero
false positives.

Floyd,
You might want to update your history.
Peter Norton sold the company to **Symantec** 17 years ago and significantly well in advance of Windows 95.

You might also wish to check your stats on AVG, the free version routinely finds(similar to other free programs)65-90% of the potential virus threats. Not a single AV program can detect 100% of undocumented virii including the fee based versions which operate in the 90%+ range.

Even the pro version of AVG (fee based) is further down the list compared to other reputable fee based versions. Here's a cross section of sites that perform ratings using a variety of different methods.
Note: These are the mostly for the free versions that have all the bells and whistle protections that the free versions contain.

http://www.av-comparatives.org//seiten/ergebnisse_2007_02.php
- scan through the history for the two available type of reports(retrospective and on demand) for performance and false positives.

For Vista,
The spot-on choice for fee based appears to be Kaspersky, Nod32 and Bit Defender.

The retail version of Symantec (Norton) is a major PITA and resource hog.
Try AOL Active Virus Shield (a Kaspersky product), you'll be glad you did :)

Hello all,
I read all your tips and views and finally plumped for Mick Murphy's link to
the Norton Removal Too. Very straight forward and it worked. Thanks, Mick.

My thanks to all who chipped in with views and tips. People like myself with
limited knowledge find these pages very useful.

Thanks again,

M

You absolutely right Winston. ANG is low on the list Mod 32 comes out top
with Kaspersky at about 78%

I prefer Panda but its three down on that list.

He didn't say AOL, he said Active Virus Shield (by Kaspersky) but offered
free by AOL. Two different things. I use Active Virus Shield and it's very
good. Doesn't hog resources at all. I was skeptical at first but after
investigation, I found that AOL didn't screw it up. (for once!)

I use panda cause it does not hog either and does everything including a
firewall. I personally would not touch either McAfee or Norton because they
not only hog but control.
