printer and windows media player problems

J.B.

I am using Windows 98. About 1 month ago, I started receiving the following
messages when I tried to print something:

"Hpftbx15 This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut
down. Hpftbx15 caused a general protection fault."

"Hpftbx15 An error has occurred in your program. To keep working anyway,
click Ignore and save your work in a new file. To quit this program, click
Close. You will lose information you entered since your last save."

When I click either Ignore or Close, the printer prints my project without
any problem.

I went online to search for a solution and found a download to fix the
Hpftbx15 problem. However, my computer started acting weird after I
downloaded it, so I went into the Downloaded Program Files and deleted some
ActiveX files, thinking they were the new download that was causing problems.

Now I still have the printing problem. Plus, I don't have any sound when I
play a Windows Media Player video. Also, when I start my computer, I get the
following messages:

"Error loading powrprof.dll"

"The SETUPAPI.DLL file is linked to missing export NTDLL.DLL:NtClose"

Can anyone help me figure this out?

We know:
1. If we have all essential drivers on hand, it takes
less than an hour to reinstal the operating system afresh.
This is desirable every one to three years.
2. You have probably accumulated more than one OS
problem (a = HPFTBX printer problem, b = ActiveX deletions,
c = no sound.) Solving all these is likely to take more
than one hour.

Your decision?

If you installed it, then always look first in...

"START button, Settings, Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs,
Install/Uninstall tab"

....for an entry that will remove it. Do you see one there now? What was
it you installed? If it gave you a wrong NTDLL.DLL, then hopefully by
uninstalling it, you will get back the right version.

"C:\WINDOWS\Downloaded Program Files"? You mean you R-Clkd these &
selected to "remove"? It should be harmless to do that. When you go back
to the site that needs one, it should download again. (I remember it to
have been glee to first say that.) It is unlikely this has anything to
do with your problems.

| Now I still have the printing problem.

I don't have an HP printer. Hpftbx15 seems to be a suite of HP tools.
Continue your Google search-- BUT report back with what you find before
trying it.

| when I play a Windows Media Player video.

I think this is a separate problem. Best do just one at a time.

I think you may have installed a wrong version of NTDLL.DLL. Here is
what mine looks like in Win98SE, fully updated...

NTDLL.DLL
Desc: Win32 NTDLL core component
Loc: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
Size: 20,480 bytes
Mod: Friday, April 23, 1999 10:22:00 PM
Ver: 4.10.1998

SETUPAPI.DLL
Desc: Windows NT Setup API
Loc: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
Size: 409,600 bytes
Mod: Friday, April 23, 1999 10:22:00 PM
Ver: 5.00.1671.1

Those are actually the original files & can be found in the Win98SE
..cab's...

Cabinet WIN98_38.CAB
04-23-1999 10:22:00p A--- 20,480 ntdll.dll

Cabinet WIN98_40.CAB
04-23-1999 10:22:00p A--- 409,600 setupapi.dll

Do you know how to get them out, if necessary?
