me won't start

Hi
When I turn on pc does the initial boot. Then I get the window saying last
shut down was bad and it wants to scan the hard drive for errors. It starts
then pc freezes. I don't have any original cds. How can I get past this?

Sherry, it sounds like your HDD (main hard drive) *may* be failing.

Depending on how important your personal files are to you, you may wish to
consider professional assistance to re-claim those file before they become
unrecoverable.

However, if you are prepared to 'have a go' yourself to see if you can fix
you PC, then you should try booting from your WinMe (floppy) Startup Disk
(if you have one. If not, come back and someone should be able to help) and
running Scandisk in Real Mode DOS as follows :-

Boot, using your WinMe Startup (floppy) Disk and select 'With CD-ROM
Support' then at the A:\> prompt, type "scandisk c:" (no quotes and note
there is a colon after the letter c) then press Return.

Follow the screen prompts - and for the first time at least, (unless you are
happy that either the disk is OK, or you can sacrifice your data) tell it
NOT to do a Surface Scan. See what it reports and keep a check on its
progress.

If it reports major problems, copy your important data to another drive (or
media) before attempting to write to (surface scan) the disk.

Don't forget to remove the floppy disk BEFORE you tell the machine to
reboot.

You can download a WinMe Bootdisk making utility (select the 'Windows Me
OEM' option) from :-
http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htm

**But be sure to read the instructions on how to actually create the
bootdisk** - which are essentially :-

Don't just copy the download to a floppy disk, download the file onto your
computer (any computer, with an A:drive) and then you MUST run the file for
it to actually create the Startup (floppy) disk. Just follow the screen
instructions.

Thanks. (my bedtime too) I will try this when I get home from work. I have
the drive at work with me and am running chkdsk and defrag. It found several
errors but still testing. Will get all files I need from it just in case the
boot disk doesn't work.

I would guess that if you are using chkdsk, then you are probably 'looking'
at your drive via an XP machine. Further, as it has found "several errors"
then it confirms my previous comment :- "it sounds like your HDD (main hard
drive) *may* be failing.

Unless you are happy to put your data 'at risk', I would suggest that you
don't run any further 'repair option' utilities (unless you suppress any
'write' function - which would be likely to compromising your data further,
on your HDD) until you've tried my previous suggestion.

Remember also, each time you attempt to boot (either in Normal or Safe
Mode), WinMe will attempt to write to your HDD - possibly causing further
damage.

If - as you appear to allude that you can see the 'removed' disk in XP -
then attempt to read (only) and/or copy your data to an alternative media
ASAP

My apologies if I sound like a doom-monger, but better safe than sorry.
