Fatal exceptions

Hello. I'm running Windows 98SE on a 433mhz Gateway with 256mb. For the
last month or two I've only been able to read/write 3 or 4 emails before I
have to restart the computer. Same thing holds true for surfing the web.
I've actually been putting up with this but now I can connect to Aol but it
freezes shortly after the welcome screen loads. In the last three days I've
had 9 different fatal exceptions. I have tried searching each on on the
internet from my other computer but don't find them mentioned anywhere. I
ran memtest from microsoft but it said my memory was fine. Any suggestions?

None of my fatal exceptions were listed on that site. Oddly, two of the
Fatal OE's linked to an article for Windows ME. The article mentioned how,
in Win ME, to access detailed info on error messages.

It seems that I'm at the point now where any time I try to launch a program
it freezes my computer. I don't know if it means anything but each time I
get another fatal exception the number is slightly different whether it's an
OE or OD error. In fact, the exact letter/number sequence has yet to repeat.
It's weird because until recently my Win98SE machine has always been more
stable than my Win ME machine.

Do none of the errors name a file at the end?

Example:
Fatal exception 0D at 168F:016775E5 in VxD somefilename

Have you checked your RAM?

Are you getting the errors in Safe Mode?

To start in Safe Mode:
- Start the computer and hold down the CTRL key till the Windows 98 Startup menu
(boot menu) appears.
OR
- Repeatedly tap the F8 key after the memory count to bring up the boot menu.
- Use the arrow keys to select "Safe Mode" and press Enter.

I tried using the computer again today. The first few times all I got was
the "System has become unstable" blue screen. When I finally got a fatal
exception blue screen it was just OD at.... Then it said the current
application would be terminated. No file name. I did download the memtest
from microsoft and let it run about five times but it reported no errors. I
did not run the extended test. The one where...I think you press "T"
Should I run that one as well?

Sorry I didn't notice the second part of your message. I did try starting
the computer in safe mode. I was unable to get on line with it in safe mode
however. I can poke around the computer without it crashing while in safe
mode so I suppose that's something. Is there any kind of diagnostic I can
run in safe mode to find out what is wrong with my system? Looking under the
"Performance" tab under system properties it said, "Compatibility-mode paging
reduces overall system performance". No clue what, if anything, that means.

In answer to your question in the other reply, yes, run the memory diagnostic long
loop test....all afternoon or overnight, whichever is more convenient.

Safe Mode in and of itself, is a sort of diagnostic test. If you are not getting
any errors while in Safe Mode, that pretty much eliminates hardware as a problem,
and puts the focus onto your software and device drivers. Since Safe Mode does not
load your video driver but uses a generic one instead, the first driver to suspect
is the video driver (though by no means the only one to suspect).

You can test the video driver as a cause of the problem by starting in Safe Mode,
then running System Configuration (Start> Run> msconfig), on the General tab click
the Advanced button.
Put a check in the box for "VGA 640 x480 x16"
Click OK all the way out and restart in normal mode when prompted.

Does this have any effect on the error messages? If the errors stop, the video
driver is likely at fault.

What the blurb means is:

If the user has the display driver for his particular display adapter installed,
then the box will be clear when entering msconfig> Advanced, and after checking the
box, it will be able to be cleared again.

If the user is *already* using the "Standard VGA 640x480" generic driver in Windows,
the box will already be checked, and it will not be possible to clear it. In order
to clear it, another display driver will have to be installed/loaded.

Please, feel free to experiment. -)

I understand. If there is no alternative display driver, Windows knows
better than to allow the box to be checked or unchecked. Otherwise, all
will be fine with that box.

Last Friday, after poking aournd the Microsoft web site, I did a Clean-Boot
and cleared all the boxes in the Selective Startup section. I was able to
get on the internet after doing so. Then I went back to the Selective
Startup menu and added one item back at a time. Each time I restarted the
computer and again tried to get on-line. The AOL/McAfee was causing the
Welcome Screen to freeze. I can now get on-line but the computer slows down
to a crawl not long after. Clicking on the blue "e" for internet explorer
has never gotten me on line so AOL is my only access. Maybe...two years ago
I tried installing Firefox but was never able to get it to work. Oh, after
the Clean Boot, I was able to read mail on my Hotmail account but as soon as
I tried to send an email the computer slowed and then stopped. Could the
video driver you mentioned earlier cause such a behaviour? Not sure if it
matters but after doing the clean boot the computer restarts much quicker.
Any thoughts or suggestions are welcome.

Well, you've skipped on ahead in troubleshooting, but without doing what I has asked
first. The clean-boot procedure would be the next logical step, but you either did
not try or did not report the results of *just* changing the display to VGA 640 x480
x16 under the Advanced section of msconfig.

After doing that, I would try the clean boot process both with the VGA 640 x480
display and with your normal display driver, to see if there is any difference

If you use AOL dial-up, you must connect with AOL and have their software running to
stay connected. Neither IE nor Firefox will get online unless you are already
connected with AOL. That's just one of the thousands of things I dislike about AOL,
and why I never use or recommend it.

Any recent version of McAfee is going to bring Win98 to its knees, and I would
uninstall it and replace it with a much lighter anti-virus. Free ones are available
that work in Win98: Grisoft's AVG, Alwill's Avast, or Avira Anti-Vir

After you have replaced McAfee with something that works correctly in Win98, you may
find some of your problems solved. Please try the suggestions above and in my
previous reply, and post back with your results.

I think it may be best to stick with glee. Anyhow, try what he said in
MSConfig. Nevertheless...

That would turn off the entire Startup Group. So, I suppose AOL doesn't
depend upon it, or you started it separately yourself. (Actually, that's
how NetZero works, too-- it isn't in the Startup Group.)

But still no crashes? It could be as glee says, that McAfee is the
culprit. When I had McAfee installed, there came a time I could not have
its Auto-System scan running without suffering sluggishness in Explorer.
Also, it became near impossible to function online. The cure for me was
to revert to an older scan engine-- however, even that seemed a tad
ornery after a while. Finally, my version of McAfee (v.5.21.1000 Scan
Engine 4.3.20) no longer would take updated definitions, even manually.
Is your version STILL getting new virus definitions?

(1) I guess try a Scandisk & Defrag-- but DON'T let them constantly
restart. If they try, abort, & post back for instructions.

(2) Try running McAfee & AOL together.

If there is no significant improvement, verify that AOL indeed is
quicker w/o McAfee running (& that you cannot find a trick or setting to
make them cooperate). If so, as glee said...

NetZero is like that too. I have to click its own connectoid & cannot
get online any other way. (Well, there may be a setting I can try-- but
I see no pressing need to chance it!)

Actually, I did the clean boot before you posted the video suggestion. I
mispoke earlier. I have verizon DSL for my ISP but continue to use use aol
for email/homepage just because it's what I'm used to from the time when all
I could afford was regular dial-up. I will try the video suggestion and
report back. As for using my hotmail email account, I am only able to read
messages not reply. The minute I try to send an email from the hotmail
account the computer slows to a crawl and the email never goes through.
