Unable to key product key off my Certificate of Authenticity.

I have a legit product key that I got when I bought my computer many many
years ago. I decided to wipe my hard drive and format it again and then
reload Windows 98. When it asked me for the Windows Product Key I entered it
exactly as it is on my Certificate of Authenticity and I do not have enough
keystrokes for it to take the number? Does anyone have any knowledge on who
I can contact at Microsoft to find out what to do?

Don't waste your time trying to get help from Microsoft (which you
won't get without paying $$$ for it).

Just pick a win-98 product key from one of these web pages:

http://www.psico.univ.trieste.it/pub//win98_serials.html

If you were entering the dashes, don't.

There are two numbers . . .
The MS Product ID is all-numeric, 20 digits, grouped 5-3-7-5.
The KS Product Key is alphanumeric, 25 characters, grouped 5-5-5-5-5.
You were supplied with both numbers on purchasing from MS: but as
posted elsewhere you can use "generic" numbers instead.

Had the same problem. Called Microsoft, they gave me a *generic* key
that they
said would work with *all* CDs, and said, "feel free to pass this on".
I guess since they don't support it anymore, there's no reason to keep
it a
secret anymore. Anyway, the generic key is:
VP9VV-VJW7Q-MHY6W-JK47R-M2KGJ
Be sure you look closely at the letters. On my LCD monitor, it is
difficult
to see the difference between the single letter W and VV, which is two
letters "V".
In the first block, VP9 is followed by two V's. The rest are W's.

The same explanation (March 28, 2007) for that product key can be
found here:

http://forums.techguy.org/windows-95-98-me/551893-solved-missing-vnetsup-vxd-vredir-5.html

It can also be found in this web-forum thread:

http://www.computertrouble.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2695

It was listed (inadvertently) as part of a Belarc Advisor system
information dump on Feb 7, 2006.

I doubt there is/was anything called a "generic" win-98 key (unless
possibly an MSDN key -?).

It looks to have been inadvertently been made public early last year.
The MVP's can put forward their own explanation - if they want.

A google search for more postings of dumps made by Belarc Advisor
turns up the following:

This is the first I heard of a "generic" I think. But, I do understand
more than one key will work for the same Setup.exe. It isn't really a
unique one per Setup!

Yep-- I see what you are saying! Everyone who posted his full Belarc
Advisor output to the NET-- has posted his ProductKey! Yikes! We must
build more prisons immediately!
