Can´t change Windows functions: error 0x800f081f

H

Heiko Schulz

Hi,

since some time I´m not able to change (add or remove) Windows features
(i.e. MSMQ or IIS).

German Vista Ultimate with Office 2007 (both activated) and Visual Studio
2005 SP1 , all patches available through Windows Update installed.
Strange: Every time when I start Windows Update the Windows Update Agent
7.0.6000.381 is sucessfully installed again (???).

When I try to change Windows feature I´ll always get this error:

[Window Title]
Windows Features

[Content]
An error has occurred. Not all of the features were successfully changed.

[OK]

The event log is full of messages complaining that "Windows Servicing failed
to complete the process of setting package XYZ into Default(Default) state".
I´ll get a least hundred messages for different packages.
Earlier there are about the same number of messages complaing that "Windows
Servicing failed to complete the process of changing update Adm from package
XYZ into Resolving(Resolving) state".
A little bit earlier there are informational messages like "Windows
Servicing is setting package
WindowsUpdateClient-SelfUpdate-Core-AdmComp-Package(Update) state to
Resolving(Resolving)".

Any idea waht to do?

Here´re some details:

Although the error code is not the same, try the Resolution here, Heiko:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/KB931712

For the repeated reinstalling of the Windows Update Agent [WUA], try
manually installing it as laid out here:
http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/blogs/mowgreen/index.php?showentry=1172

The WUA issue may be what's preventing updates from being successfully
installed.

Re: Can´t change Windows functio

Hi,

KB931712 seems to be something else. The registry key that shall be deleted
there doesn´t exist in my registry. So it´s not working.

I already tried to install the Windows Update Agent 3.0 version 7.0.6000.381
manually but I didn´t change the behaviour. Everytime I run Windows Update it
tells me that it needs to update Windows Update and I see a fresh sucessful
"Windows-Update-Software 7.0.6000.381" entry in the update history log.

:-(

Bye
Heiko

At this point in time, all I know is what the error code represents:

> 0x800f081f source for package or file not found, ResolveSource()unsuccessful

which is what you had posted previously. Sorry that KB was of no use.
As to what would cause this ... could be any number of 'things'
Corrupted transaction logs an issue with the installer interference
from security/3rd party software moving folders to non-Default
locations a bug in the latest V. of the WUA, etc.

Looking back at you first post I noticed this from the Event Log:

Date: 03.10.2007 15:49:50
<PackageIdentifier>WindowsUpdateClient-SelfUpdate-Core-AdmComp-Package</PackageIdentifier>
<ReleaseType>Update</ReleaseType>
<PackageState>Resolving</PackageState>

<PackageAssembly>WUClient-SelfUpdate-Core-AdmComp~31bf3856ad364e35~x86~~7.0.6000.374</PackageAssembly>
<Operation>Resolved</Operation>
<OperationCompleted>False</OperationCompleted>
<ErrorCode>0x0</ErrorCode>

The Version of the WUClient should be .381. See if there is another
entry that shows the WUClient being updated to .381, Heiko.

Let's start with ... has UAC been Disabled ?
Which antivirus/security suite is installed ?

Re: Can´t change Windows functio

Hi MowGreen ,

at first I´d like to thank you for your assistance in analyzing my Windows
Update problems.

There´s Office 2007, Visual Studio 2005 SP1, Daemontools and VMWare Player
installed.
I stopped all 3rdparty and also a lot of Microsoft services and tried to
install WUA and the Windows features, always the same errors.
I didn´t move any folders. Of course the german Vista shows different folder
names but these are only links to the original (english) folders.

Ah, interesting. I didn´t detect that the old version of the WUClient is
still used.
Everytime I reinstall the .381 version I get a new entry in the history log
that it sucessfully installed. Also installing it manually I get no error.
But it seems that this is not correct.
Otherwise regarding to the event log the error also happend with .374. The
oldest entries are at least from May. Unfortunatly I didn´t remember these
specific errors.

But I remember that some time ago I had a problem to install some updates
and that I had to restart Vista at least 10 time before the updates installed
sucessfully without "hanging" the PC.

You mentioned something about corrupted transaction logs.
Is it possible to rebuild/dump this logs without reinstalling Vista?

With enables and disabled UAC always the same errors.

> Which antivirus/security suite is installed ?

I´m using CA´s AntiVirus package. Also tried it with disabled CA-processes,
same result.

Re: Can´t change Windows functio

Hi MowGreen ,

it seems that I finally found "a solution" for my problem.
Not the intended one but a solution.

Your hint regarding the old version of the WUClient was correct!

I checked the installed DLLs and made sure that the new version 381 is
always used.
Nevertheless the error messages complains about a problem with the old
version 374.

So I decided to delete all references of the old version 7.0.6000.374.
It was really a lot of work to delete all registry entries in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Component Based
Servicing referencing this version and also deleting the package references
in %windir%\servicing\Packages but finally the installation windows features
works again.

MSMQ is installed, hey, ho! :)

Thank you very much.

Heiko

PS: Of course I made copies of the registry keys and the files before
deleting the entries. -)

You're welcome and *very* well done, Heiko. Do you mind if I forward
this post to the Update Team?
Something is amiss with the way the WUA is installing in Vista
regardless of the installed antivirus software.

of course if you think it is helpful for them.

To my mind the problem was caused by the WUA 7.0.6000.374 version because
regarding to the event log the problems started May, 8th. I think that
version was released in May (german version dated to 2007/04/17).
But I´m not quite sure whether the problem was caused by the WUA itself or
an update that was installed by the WUA.

One concept I still don´t understand is that the old version was still
referenced by the updates that were installed by that version. But also the
new version was referenced. So the old WUA and all the updates it installed
ran into the problem but not the updates that were installed earlier and
later.

Another finding is that the Windows Feature Installation seems to check all
installed packages. Normal updates doesn´t seem to do this, so they didn´t
run into the problem.

Bye
Heiko
