Apparently the cut and pasted email did not go through in its entirety, trying again.

Dear Bruce,

The upgrade to Windows 7 from Vista was available from Microsoft for a limited time and the upgrade disc allowed Vista owners to connect to Microsoft online servers to upgrade to windows 7. this system was discontinued by Microsoft back in 2010. in order to install windows 7 on the laptop, you will have to buy a licence for it from Microsoft.
