So I have had a hell of a day.
I have a custom build pc that I have had for a number of years, and on it I had Windows 8 installed (Which was then upgraded to 10 back with the free update). A couple years ago I decided to install a dual boot on this computer with Ubuntu & Windows for my university. It was useful for a time but eventually got on my nerves.
Now I'm not exactly the most informed person when it comes to computing, but I try. I decided to uninstall Ubuntu so I deleted the partition. This is where everything went wrong.
Now my PC wont boot to an OS and is instead stuck on GRUB rescue (which I believe is the Linux boot). To repair it I attempted to use my Windows disk, however no matter what I use it fails:
(Apologies if I get this a little wrong)#
If I try to refresh the system is states there is no such partition
If I reset it says the partition is locked
If I use the command prompt and chkdsk /r it says its write protected.
I have also tried using the grub commands to find the correct partition with an OS installed - setting the root and prefix /boot/grub but again no go.
So finally I have my final option (that I can see) which is reinstall windows 8. However, lucky me, no licence key.
I have tried finding my key on my account but apparently I don't have this computer linked (it must have been at some point? As this is the only Microsoft account I can remember having.)
I realise this is way outside what a normal customer would ask - but absolutely any advice would be great.
Thanks
