Flash drive Win98 compatibility?

The wife and I are trying to nurse our old computers along until tax
return time when we'll buy new ones. We both have AMD750s on GAIXE
boards. My old HP burner went mams up so I bought a new one from the
local comp store. It came with Nero 7 & claimed to be compatible with
win98 but I couldn't get it to burn anything. I used my old burner as
another drive with drag & drop capability for back-ups and the like. I
only have a 20 GB HD & space is becoming an issue. I took it to the
store I bought the drive at & they had to put an older burner in to
get it to work with win98 at all. We also discovered Nero 7 won't
support drag & drop in win98. The option to install InCD isn't even
there, even when doing a custom install. Doing some investigation I
discovered this is a long standing issue with Nero & the last version
fully compatible with win98 is Nero 5.

As a possible way around this issue I'm considering a flash drive but
all the drives I find don't list win98 in the system requirements. A
friend told me that I should be able to download drivers for win98 on
the web. I don't want to spend $40 then not be able to use the flash
drive. Has anyone dealt with this issue? Thanks for your time.

Win98 included USB version 1 from its first appearance.
USB version 2 soon appeared and is still the current standard,
therefore Win98SE was marketed, with support for USB.v.2.

Hard drives are now so cheap that
(a) if an extra hard drive does not meet your requirements
(b) an external HD connecting via USB may suit you
better than a small flashdrive. But you are likely still
to need USB.v.2 (i.e. Win98SE).

That is true. Anyway, Target has Sony Flash Drives that are backwards
compatible to Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition. I still think Windows 98
First Edition is too old if you want to effectively use USB well and lacks
many other improvements of 98 Second Edition. I am currently trying to have
APS schools that are connected to the Internet to use Windows 98 Second
Edition. I am suggesting that the schools that has DOS 5 with Windows 3.1 to
remain off line and just use compatible educational software.

Hi.

You can look here, which in this case, is for Lexar Flash Drives (JumpDrive
Firefly).
Capacities, and prices (Note: these prices are retail, and no-one pays
retail not even close to retail):
JDFF256-431 256MB $14.99
JDFF512-431 512MB $19.99
JDFF1GB-431 1GB $36.99
JDFF2GB-431 2GB $49.99
JDFF4GB-431 4GB $99.99
JDFF8GB-431 8GB $149.99
USB Flash Drives - JumpDrive FireFly
http://store.lexar.com/?category=23&subcategory=41

Cost, at eBay has been approximately $20.00 - $30.00 USD for 4 GB models
(I've purchased several in that price range).

Using the Lexar in W98 will find you needing a driver of course. It can be
obtained at no cost from either of these URL's below:
Lexar JumpDrive Driver 2.0
http://www.softwarepatch.com/utilities/lexar-jumpdrive.html
Applies to:Lexar USB JumpDrive, Pro, Secure, Sport, Elite and Photo
Requirements: Windows 98
Author/Supplier: Lexar
File Size: 0.2MB
File Name: Jdusb2.exe
download:
http://www.softwarepatch.com/utilities/lexarjumpdrive-security.html
Description
This JumpDrive driver package for the Lexar USB JumpDrive, Pro, Secure,
Sport, Elite and Photo is needed only for Windows 98.
Windows Me, 2000 and XP already have the driver (if you are having trouble
using the drive on these systems, then it is likely to be a conflict or
problem in Windows - see the Windows Device Manager and Windows Help file
for details).

USB JumpDrives - Drivers
http://www.lexar.com/drivers/index.html
download:
http://www.lexar.com/drivers/files/jdusb2.exe

This *SHOULD* work in W98 (F.E./Gold).
The 1st site specifies that it does apply to W98.
The Lexar site specifies: "Windows 98 Driver for all Lexar JumpDrives"

The Lexar site then lists W98se, but I'm not entirely certain of that. Of
course (?), I am using W98se, so I cannot guarantee nor verify compatibility
with plain-vanilla W98, but.... it should work.

Oh, and one more thing: Many, if not *most* packages for Lexar Jump
Drives/Flash Drives, no longer have any references to W98 or even W98se
imprinted on the current packaging, however, they do work on W98se.
I even bought an 8GB Lexar (very recently) which are quite new on the
circuit and not only did it not list W98/se on the packaging, but the
enclosed instructions also made no reference to W98 only listing Win2000/
WinXP, and so forth.
Nevertheless, I've had no trouble whatsoever getting the 8GB Flash drive to
be recognized and to work in W98se.

I hope this will help.

I should have added that I also used the aforementioned Lexar Flash Drives
in W98se under USB 1.1 until I obtained a USB 2.0 Host Controller PCI Card.
Even so, before getting that USB 2.0 card, they worked fine, albeit a bit on
the "slow side".

Wishing you luck. :)
