Kernel32.dll error

In my other ME machine, when I try to download an attachement, I get this
error message {Iexplore has caused an error in the Kernel32.dll. Iexplore
will now closed}

Although there are many articles/solutions to the kernel32.dll, none seems
to describe my situation.
I try to follow the suggestion from {
http://www.dll-files.com/dllindex/dll-files.shtml?kernel32}
but it seems I cannot install or replace/rename the kernel32.dll file as the
old one being in use. How can I rectify this error then, thanks

Forget about replacing kernel32.dll, I rather doubt that a damaged file is
the cause of this problem.

When did the problem start? If recently use system restore and roll back
to a checkpoint created when you know you didn't have this problem. You
mention downloading an attachment, but could you explain in a little more
detail how you trigger this problem. Download an attachment from what?
From a web page I assume but what sort of web page? Web mail perhaps?

Have you thoroughly checked the system using an updated and current Win Me
compatible AV application?

I cant exactly know how it happened as I have left this machine idle for a
while since it gave me the downloading problem. Just that I was trying to
resolve the issue now.
I was trying to download an attachement from my Yahoo mail. For your info,
just now when I was trying to defrag it, it tell me that there is some
problem and that I need to scan first and repair my disk. It has been
scanning for a while now and it does not seems to progress (as seen from the
progress bar).

When I try to install IE6, it will give a message " Set up was unable to
install all the components. Please close all applications and try again."
There is no other applicaitons open. I disable the anti virus and it still
give me the same message.

When I try to do System Restore, it give a message "System Restore cannot
run until you restart the computer ......." Its still the same after
rebooting.

Its seems a lot to chew............thanks

You do seem to let your systems get in to a bit of a state don't you.

Try running scandisk from Safe Mode.

An all too familiar error message.

First check whether you have a WININIT.INI file in your C:\WINDOWS folder.
If present rename it to something like wininit.old and try booting again.

If you don't have a copy of wininit.ini stopping you from using system
restore try the following.
Click Start | Run and enter in the box
SCANREG /FIX
and click OK. Note that the system will re-boot so don't have any
applications open when doing this. I suggest this because the same
message about restarting when trying to create a checkpoint is also
displayed when the registry has been corrupted in some way. scanreg /fix
attempts to repair that damage.

Please try the following quick test:
a) Create a shortcut on your desktop to a file (any file will do).
b) Create a manual checkpoint
Could you create a checkpoint?
c) Delete the shortcut you made at a)
d) Restore your PC to the checkpoint you created.at b)
Was the shortcut restored? Did you see any error messages?
e) Reboot your PC
Was the checkpoint retained?

If the test fails please post back the full text of any and all error
messages seen and we can try taking it forward from there.

Let's try one thing at a time please. If you've got an aborted or failed
IE6 install I'm not really that surprised that you are now having problems
using Internet Explorer. Once you've got scandisk sorted out and fixed
system restore we can hopefully move on to your other problems.

At last the scan disk and defrag finished which took ages. During the scan
/fix process, there was a message "Ccapp - Ccapp has caused an error in
Kernel.dll Ccapp will now closed"
Continue the process, yes a new short cut was created, deleted and was able
to be restored using the System Restore. Thanks

Fyi, when I try to do WU and when it try to install IE6 SP1 , there is a
message that says unable to install all the components. When I click
'closed', there is this backgriund saying successfully install and need a
restart. Up restart it will "Resume Windows Update:Internet Explorer and
Internet Tools' and it will fail to install all trhe components.

When I try to go to Yahoo mail and download an attachment, It will still
give the "Kernel32.dll error." message.

Internet Explorer is still at Version 5.50.4134 .0100. Thanks

I'm pleased to read you now have a working system restore. I suspect you
might be needing it.

Oh dear! The most common variant of Ccapp is part of Norton which is
known to be one of the most effective way of destroying Win Me systems and
far more effectively than the malware it purports to try and prevent. IMO
if you are running NAV or NIS you need to seriously consider removing all
traces of these programs and use an alternative AV application if you want
to stand a chance of having a decent working Win Me system.

I'm sorry but I am unwilling to continue trying to assist until I read
that you have removed all traces of Norton from your system.

However you might want to try the following to help you get IE6 installed
but get rid of Norton first or at the very least disable it whilst trying
to install IE6:
Using Windows Explorer first set it so you can view hidden system files
and folders (Tools | Folder Options | View and check "Show hidden files
and folders" and UNcheck "Hide protected operating system files" and
Apply).

Create a new folder "C:\Program Files\Internet Backup"

Locate the folder "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Uninstall
Information". Move the contents of this folder to the folder "C:\Program
Files\Internet Backup" created above.

Now try installing IE6, re-selecting all components that you want using
the Advanced option, even those already bolded, and see if this works. If
this works you can now safely delete the folder "C:\Program Files\Internet
Backup" and its contents. If not, copy the files back to the "C:\Program
Files\Internet Explorer\Uninstall Information" folder and delete the
"C:\Program Files\Internet Backup" folder.

Sorry just read your message and now I have uninstalled NAV2005 and ran their
NRT. (btw just created another problem, accidently uninstall the graphic
driver).
So what shall I do next (leaving the graphic driver aside), thanks

Perhaps read the rest of post to which you replied and try installing IE6?

As for your graphics driver that should be a simple problem to resolve.
Go the graphics card manufacturer's web site and download the latest Win
Me driver for your particular adapter. Then install. If you are unsure
how to proceed you should find details on the web site of what you need to
do.

Now IE6.0 been installed and WU done and it seems no problem in downloading
the attachement. I have also managed to installed the graphic driver. Many
thanks for your help and patience.

a moment) is why Symantec don't get prosecuted. And all the others. All the
ones who perpetuate the B$ on a daily basis and rake in the result on a
daily basis.

and-pissed-off-on-account-of-it people in this world, I *will* make sure the
corporate crooks and slimey politicos get what they really deserve. Like

Wow! Success! Well done SharonTango!

Now that you've got yourself back a working system and hopefully now
Norton free please make sure that you do install and use an updated Win Me
friendly AV program. There are many available, some of which are free,
including products such as AVG, NOD32, Panda, Kaspersky and Avast!

Thanks for the advice. NAV - she is out of my life and now using Adaware, AVG
and Spbot, Recently Spybot, there is problem during the scanning. It gives a
message regarding Trojan which will post in Spybot forum.
