Hello all..
I have a maybe stupid question, but I really dont know the answer..

I have been running Windows ME for years now with very few issues..
But I just think its time for me to move on to XP..ME is too difficult to find any help or answers for these days.

My question is..
What is the best way to do this?
Is it best to simply "upgrade" to XP from ME, or to delete ME altogether and install a fresh copy of XP?
This is new to me and I will have to do this myself so what is the best way to go about this?
I just want to be sure that I wind up with a fresh installation of Windows XP and nothing else with it

I would be inclined to Format C: and install XP after backing up any
important files.

If that were true, and it isn't, why are you posting here? I don't recall
having seen you post in any of the Win Me newsgroups asking for help and
I'm one of those who has been reading and posting here for the last seven
years although I obviously can't remember everyone who has posted over
those years.

So, other than asking for help with installing XP in a Win Me newsgroup
what actual problems are you having with Win Me that have prompted you to
think about changing your operating system? Perhaps we can help.

If you do want to upgrade, and I'm not saying you shouldn't since I'm
posting this reply from a PC running XP, the very first thing you should
think of doing is to run the XP Upgrade Advisor, of which there is a copy
on each XP CD as this will give you some indication as to how compatible
your existing hardware and programs are with XP and what you will need to
change. If your PC is old it might be easier in the long run to consider
purchasing a new PC with XP pre-installed although such machines won't be
available for all that much longer due to the release of the Vista
operating system earlier this year.

I have only ever used Win ME and it is difficult to find help for which is
WHY Im posting here.
Maybe it isnt hard for some..doesnt apply to everyone..especially if your
not very computer savvy.
This is not my first post in a Win ME newsgroup seeking help...so Im
obviously one of those you dont recall.
I have an older model pc at that which makes things more difficult to
accomplish..
I have been getting more and more error messages which may or may not have
anything to do with Win ME,
such as "operation aborted" pages, Active X error messages, and alot of
programs that seem to require you have at least XP to run them, or upgrade
them.

I asked for help installing XP in a ME newsgroup because I have ME now and
not XP. I thought others here may have done this already and would know what
I needed to do.

My error. Win Me was released over seven years ago and I believe you made
your first posting to this newsgroup on August 17 this year when you asked
about AdAware. You also asked about using browsers other than IE where
you were referred to Firefox. You may have made other posts but none of
them have been archived by Google.

Examples please. Without details such as the test of the error messages
and the circumstances only those with a crystal ball will be able to help
so if you need help please post some details and I'm people will be only
too happy to dive in and try and help you, just as they did when you asked
previously about AdAware and alternative browsers.

You are quite correct however in that many modern applications now require
a minimum of either Windows 2000 and increasingly XP the reason being that
Win Me, in common with the rest of the Win 9x family of operating systems
is long out of support meaning that writing applications for this platform
is unlikely to be cost effective for many software houses who tend to
prefer to produce for a market where they will hopefully see some income.
This is sad as older copies of many programs still work very effectively
with Win Me however that isn't the case with hardware with most modern
hardware requiring modern drivers and without Win Me compatible drivers
this hardware can't be used with Win Me. The same is even starting to
occur with XP with some recent hardware no longer having XP drivers and
instead having Vista drivers alone.

Please see my previous post. Note that if, as you say, you have older
hardware then until you run the XP upgrade advisor you won't know whether
your system can support XP. Once you know this you can then decide
whether to upgrade Win Me to XP or to clean install XP. It is possible
however that your system will not support XP in which case you might be
better off buying a new XP box.

No crystal balls needed..the next time I receive these errors..I will post them..
I just couldnt remember the exact wording of the error messages just then.
I did receive a lot of help all from very friendly ppl in the newsgroups in regards to the AdAware and
alternative browsers..one of which I've recently installed and growing quite fond of.

Yes, you are right..I am seeing Vista popping up everywhere and being that I am on an older
model pc..I may just have to wind up getting a newer one..
I *think* my pc can support XP..but may run slow...however I am no expert in that area unfortunately..

I have your previous post aside for reference.
I do have a lot of older copies of different programs which most need to be upgraded/updated now
and that is where the problem started.
Or if I happen to update anything..for example..I updated my Yahoo msgr..I works, but not without
crashing on me half the time or freezing. I rarely had that problem before I put in the newest version.
Reasons such as this is why I was thinking I needed to upgrade from Win ME..which I really hate to
do because I like my Win ME. Just wanted to get an idea if it was worth the effort on an older pc like mine.

What processor does your PC have and how much memory. If you don't know
you should be able to find this information at System Properties | General
(right click on My Computer on the desktop and select Properties and look
on the General tab).

Intel (r) family 6 model 5 processor
and the memory is 128MB.

Now I know that memory amount is nothing compared to whats out now..I did
intend to purchase more..but havent yet because I wondered if
it was worth it since even with more memory, Id still have the
same drivers and other hardware...

A Family 6 Model 5 cpu is a Slot 1 Pentium II (Deschutes core) which was
produced with various speed ratings ranging from 333MHz to 450MHz and
combined with 128MB of RAM is going to be a bit pushed to run XP, or
rather when running XP pushed to run much in the way of applications.
More memory would help but suitable memory is now quite expensive and
isn't always easy to find. Having said that I ran XP for a couple of
years on a PII 450 and didn't really have much in the way of problems but
I did have 384MB of RAM. Nevertheless your system _will_ run XP, minimum
system requirements for running XP are 233MHz and 64MB however Microsoft
recommended 300MHz or higher and 128MB or higher. Adding an additional
128MB of RAM would make a significant difference as would 256MB.

It'll run XP but at a snail's pace. I would recommend 384 or 512 for the
memory. With the price for that kind of RAM, though, you could almost
buy a new low end PC.

A PII 450 with 384MB isn't that bad however the cost of 256MB of what is
nowadays quite expensive SDRAM together with the cost of XP when put
against a new PC and its really no contest especially so if Tarcia is able
to use her existing monitor and gets away with just buying the box. OK, I
take that back, 256MB of Crucial PC133 SDRAM is around GBP21 which is much
less than it was a year ago and whilst a retail copy of XP is still quite
expensive I see that OEM copies of XP Home are available here for GBP52.
Since Tarcia appears to be in New York prices should be considerably less
given the software mark-up outside the US and no VAT to pay so she may
well get away with as little as US$100.

I also feel that moving to XP is probably preferable to Vista as Win Me to
Vista could be quite traumatic so moving soon is a must if Tarcia decides
to buy a new PC otherwise she will have little choice but Vista. On the
other hand she might welcome the challenge that is Vista especially if she
has just the one PC and doesn't have a LAN.

Tarcia.....go back to the previous version of Yahoo Messenger. That
damn program crashed my WinME eons ago. Do you really have to use it??
There are many alternatives such as ICQ, Skype, and so on.

I will check my favourite spot and see if your older Yahoo version is on
there, which is probably a yes. But make sure you uninstall it from
Control Panel, then Add/Remove.

crashing on me half the time or freezing. I rarely had that problem
before I put in the newest version.
Reasons such as this is why I was thinking I needed to upgrade from Win
ME..which I really hate to
do because I like my Win ME. Just wanted to get an idea if it was worth
the effort on an older pc like mine.

Hi Heather..
I dont "really" have to use it..but I was using yahoo IM to keep in contact
with family, and
so when the new download came out..I gave it a whirl...but its annoying..I
can honestly see
why you dont allow it.
I dont even remember which one I had...7.0 or something I think..
I havent used ICQ in eons..do ppl still use it? Skype I am just hearing
about...its new to me..
but someone told me to try something called Trillion....I think I have the
name right...
but apparently you're supposed to be able to use any IM with it so you can
eliminate the need for
all the others...
I did have the newer version of the AIM but I did get rid of it since
everytime I ran it..everything shut down.

I figured it would probably run that slow..and I definitely need more
memory..but you are
right..they are expensive...so are the XP discs..and yes..I am in
NY...making it terrible in
the range of prices..
Im familiar somewhat with XP..as my mother runs it and I have to help her
sometimes..
I have used Vista as well....I really really dont like it...that is a
horrible traumatic leap forward
coming from Win ME...I couldnt find anything...they've moved stuff all
around....well Im sure you
already know the deal on it...

I did have that thought also..just keeping the monitor and getting a new
box..

You can run WinXP on about a PII 450 MHz with 128 MB of RAM. My company has
a few systems like that. You should notice a significant improvement with
256 MB RAM, which might be the cheapest hardware suggestion if you can't
afford to buy a new system anytime soon. If you can afford a new system,
that would be cheaper in the long run, rather than wasting money on RAM now
if you're going to be replacing it later anyway. A whole new system with
monitor and no OS should run about US$600. I'm not sure offhand if a new
system would be compatible with an old monitor.

I expect WinXP Upgrade version still runs nearly US$100, though I haven't
shopped for it lately so you may be able to find it cheap if everyone is
going to Vista now. I haven't had to deal with Vista yet so I can't say how
much of a learning curve it has. It is *supposed* to be easier for the
average user, though they did move and rename everything technical that a
system admin has to mess with. WinXP is practically exactly like WinME if
you select the Classic theme, and of course it is more stable, more
compatible with new programs, and more of a resource hog.

If you are looking to upgrade an old WinME system to WinXP just because
"WinME has problems", I wouldn't necessarily recommend it. First you'd want
to examine what those problems are and see if they are really relatively
easy to fix. If IE crashes frequently, you might want to try repairing it,
or you could try a different browser. From what I've seen, Firefox is a
better browser. Just upgrading the OS could be a really bad idea if your
problems are something such as a failing hard drive. If you want to try it
anyway, you have several options. You could just try installing XP over ME.
If you have a proper backup device available, you could try copying over
everything you want to save, then formatting the hard drive and installing
XP fresh. If you have a second hard drive available, you could try
formatting that one and putting XP on it, and switching it to be the primary
boot device. If you don't know what you're doing, it is best to ask someone
who does know for help.

She doesn't allow it because it crashed her machine. I have YIM version
8.1.0.195, module 8.0.0.1 running on a Windows ME computer. It does not
crash the computer. I have YIM version 8.1.0.209, module 8.0.0.1 running on
a Windows XP computer.

However, if you find it annoying, falling back to an earlier version that
you liked should still work. Just keep in mind: The older versions have
exploitable vulnerabilities. They fix those by releasing the later versions.

Yahoo Messenger that they have available is v7.0.x, which requires Win 2000
or higher, and is not designer to run on Win ME. (See:

http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=yahoo . Unfortunately, they don't
specify what the systems requirements are, and don't say which is the last

I definitely dont know how to reformat and switching to the primary boot
device..
but thank you so much for all the suggestions and Im gonna get someone to
help me
do them..
It does seem though that I will probably just have to purchase another pc..
it may be a low end pc but it will be a more updated one than what I've got
now..

but I will have to switch back.
