help: can't share files

C

Curtis Croulet

I have two laptops connected with a crossover Ethernet cable. One laptop
has Windows XP SP2, the other Windows 98 SE. The XP computer can see and
retrieve files from the 98 computer, but the 98 computer cannot see files on
the XP computer, even though the XP computer appears in "Network
Neighborhood." When I try to access the XP computer, I get a message saying
"Toshibacurtis is not accessible" and "The computer or sharename could not
be found. Make sure you have typed it correctly and try again." What do I
need to do to make the XP computer visible to the 98 computer?

Re: can't share files

windows 98 uses a fat 32 file system
windows xp uses an ntfs file system

the windows xp computer can read both because it supports both file
systems. but windows 98 does not support both so it can only read from fat
file systems you would have to upgrade the computer to read both

While I don't have an answer for the OP I can tell you that your answer is
wrong. What you've said is correct for local access to the different file
systems but it does not apply to network access which is what the OP is
describing.

Re: can't share files

Thanks. I solved the immediate issue by transfering the files via a memory
stick. That was the solution this time. As for the file network access
issue, XP help says I have to run the network install wizard to enable
access by another computer, but the network install wizard has no relevant
options to give access to the XP computer. Plus it wanted me to write a
network disk that I'd have to run on the other PC (which is Win 98 SE), but
then it claimed I didn't have any removable media (it's looking for a floppy
drive!), even though the XP computer has a CD burner.

Re: can't share files

yeh sorry paul was right it doesnt apply to network transfers the filesystem
support part.

you can usually transfer the network settings via a usb removable media disk
two if thats what your using you wont be able to do it via cd tho no idea
why that doesnt work
