Networking W98 & XP - Help

I am trying to network an XP Dell laptop to a W98 (first edition) Gateway
desktop and I'm having some problems. I've read and tried to use most of the
tips I've seem in earlier posting, all without success. Both computers are
Ethernet wired to a US Robotics router and both computers can access the
internet thru the router. However, neither computer shows up in the other's
MY NETWORK, nor can they access each other via Find/Search or the RUN \\
methods mentioned in previous postings. Also, the W98 desktop cannot access
the printer via the router, though it can access the printer when connected
directly to the printer (bypassing the router). The XP can print to the
printer thru the router, although I get a “Could not connect to the printer.â€
warning message immediately before the printer starts printing. (Go
figure!). I have checked the printer’s share name and it is Printer, no
spaces or hyphens, and not more than 12 characters. Some of the suggestions
in some earlier posting were above my level of expertise though I did try to
use them. This is my first foray into networking so any advice needs to be
at an intermediate level at best. I guess my first question is, is the
networking I desire beyond the limits of W98 first edition? Most, if not all
of the networking I’ve read about in postings seem to talk about W98SE.
Then, if W98 first edition can be networked to an XP, I’ll take any advice on
what I should try next.

Hi Jim,
Hope I can help, I have 3 computers, 2 -w98 and a winxp. I have a wireless
D-link 614+ router (old one) it has 4 wireless ports. I have a win98se
hooked by wire to one port on router and the incoming network cable hooked
to back of router(wan-wide area network). the software for router is on the
win98se, and have printer hooked to it. It is like the "boss" I have the
wireless cards in the others , winxp and win98 for my (lan-local area
network). I access printer easy going through the hooked up win98 from the
other computers.
I think your win 98would work this way.
Each computer has a drive letter and name , the soft ware for router has a
wizard for helping with linking the others.
They can all see each other as long as they are on. I can send to printer
even if the "boss" is shut down, goes through router.

Barb,
Things are even worse tonight. Somehow, in going through pages of options
and settings, I managed to set up the LAN so now I can’t print at all.
Whenever I try to print through the router, I get messages like “Before you
print, you need to select a printer.†or “Windows cannot print due to a
problem with the current printer setup.†or “Word cannot print. There is no
printer installed.†But I believe the printer is installed on the router and
on each computer correctly. I can print from either the XP or the W98 when
they are directly connected to the printer. However, when I go to “Add
Printer†and type the printer’s URL, I get this error message: “Windows
cannot connect to the printer. Either the printer name was typed incorrectly
or the specified printer has lost its connection to the server.†This did
not happen yesterday. Yesterday the printer installation on the router went
very smoothly and I could print via the router from the XP. But not now.
Most frustrating!
Also, the computers still can’t seem to see each other. The router’s client
list shows both the XP Dell laptop and the W98 Gateway desktop, but that is
about the only indication of networking I can see. Neither computer shows up
on the others Network Neighborhood, etc.
Any ideas?

Hi Jim,
Just wondering, do you have a firewall that could be blocking? Have you
checked that each computer is set to share? go to start, control panel
network connections and check
internet options. I would even try to set up another connection and see
what happens.
I don't have my printers set to the adapter, only to the "boss 98", how do
you do that, do you have to buy adapter card for printer?
