Transferring Server Licensing to another server?

How can i remove a license from my current Server 2016, and make it a temp trial key, and transfer the server license to my new server?


I need to transfer data off the old server while i have the new server up and running..


Is it as easy as just doing slmgr /upk product-serial-key on the old server

and doing slmgr /ipk product serial key on the new server?


this is a retail copy of Server 2016 Standard, not an OEM copy..

It would be good if i can keep my old server up for at least a few days before turning it off..

will unregistering the key cause the system to automatically go back to trial, and if so, how long will it allow me to keep it on?


Any help anyone can provide would be much appreciated..
