You would downgrade from Windows 98 to Windows NT. You may want to change
from the 9x consumer operating system to the business NT (New Technology aka
Not There) operating system but many in this newsgroup may not feel that it
is an upgrade to switch from 98 especially 98 Second Edition to NT and I am
guessing you are referring to XP.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_98 (98 Second Edition released on May
5, 1999)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_NT_4.0 (latest with NT in name and
released on July 29, 1996)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_2000 (still supported but primarily
caters to businesses and not used too much anymore --- releaseed on February
17, 2000)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_XP (supported and suggested but has
highly critical vulnerabilities to be aware of --- check secunia.com website
in search box for details)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Vista (secure operating system that I
would suggest using if you don't need to worry about backwards compatibility
especially after service pack 1 comes out and kinks are worked out such as
too much automatic crap that gives you warning a warning message but you need
to read up in a log later on, user account control needs to be overhauled --
I have it turned off until then, Internet Explorer 7 still needs to learn
from Mozilla Firefox about all the cool extensions and realize its browser is
second best or even third best from Mozilla Firefox first and then probably
Opera and then Internet Explorer 6 and then I.E. 7. There are many reasons I
say this and will discuss them more fully in detail if people are interested
in debating in the browser war thread. Finally, I did not even include
Windows ME because it was 9x consumer source code based but seemed to be just
a crappy released operating system to help push all users to one line of
source code which was NT and help Microsoft save money in the long run
because it is really expensive to maintain 2 lines of source code and that is
why the federal gov't (DOD, NSA, myself, other professionals, Google,
Mozilla, etc.) want to purchase the 9x source code from Microsoft.
Unfortunately, Microsoft has been stubborn about holding unto their IP
(Intellectual Property) but hopefully the Feds and/or European Union will
help Microsoft see the light that competition is good for all consumers and
we need the 9x source code for many things. I am in deep discussion about
this with Chris Quirke, MVP.
