Why is my public desktop showing and not the private one for the account I am logged in with?

I am not on a guest account, I am logged into the admin account and there's a bunch of things in this account's Desktop folder that are appearing in the actual folder but not on the desktop. I am instead only seeing icons for what's in the public desktop.
