How do you block ads so searching the web is faster?

This is what I currently use to get rid of ads
I have everything I my computer updated and I try to keep every
updated I have my cookie settings on the highest setting in internet
explorer so then I don't get cookie viruses or some adware from third
party sites. I don't use internet explorer though but any third party
browser is going to still use the guts of IE because it is the way
Windows is set up so having that up to date and secure the more secure
third party browser will be I use Fire Fox with ADblock and Flashblock
the reason why I don't use noscript is because some sites wouldn't
work right in login because it uses java or flash to login you in so
then it's advertisers will be able to send ads in java or flash so I
use flashblock which just replaces the flash or java with a play
button so you don't have to see it.

But is their any way of blocking it from contacting your computer so
it can speed up your internet connection I have heard that putting the
websites of major advertisers in your host file will make your
computer think that those sites are from your computer so then when it
tries to contact it it contacts your computer instead. but does any
body know if that is safe? so any method that you know of is welcome
just as long as it works.

On most browsers I have found that if you disable third party cookies you can
drastically reduce the amount of ad cookies you will receive, usually find it
in Tools, Options, Privacy, Advanced (IE 6). Netscape and Firefox takes a
little more sluething to find. Cookies are not that great of a threat
although they may point to something more critical. Scans are good,
sometimes multiple scanners work (although not at the same time) due to the
fact that they use different technology to look at the drive.
One item if you do not mind file not found errors, one of the most dramatic
changes I made was to my hosts file (file not found because it was
advertising).

127.0.0.1 ad.doubleclick.net

If you find this to be too restrictive on ad's just remove the entry from
your hosts file. The 3rd party cookie changes can also be reversed.

I do not use Anti-virus software because it can be vary unreliable.
I use Highjackthis, Process Explorer, and TCP View to check for any
unwanted software and when I find something new or suspicious I look
it up at sites like this
http://www.processlibrary.com/ I have not had any problems since I
have set up my computer as secure as possible and have every thing up
to date including the drivers for my hardware Which Microsoft does not
usually update that for you.
does any one know if it is safe to use the Opting Out of DoubleClick's
Monitoring by downloading it's cookied like it said to do at this site
