Added more than 512Meg Ram, now no windows!

I increaded my ram from 512K to 1.5 gig, and I got this message at the
end of autoexect.bat, but I wasn't concerned because on this group or
some other I had seen it discused already:

When initializing device V86MNGR?: Insufficient memory to initialize
windows. Quit one or more memory-resident programs or remove
unnecessary utilites from your config.sys or autoexec.bat and restart
your computer.

I found the message on the web and the fix it said was to

Use the MaxFileCache setting in the System.ini file to reduce the
maximum amount of memory that Vcache uses to 512 megabytes (524,288
KB) or less.

So I did that in the [Vcache] section,

MaxFileCache=524288.

but nothing changed. I think I must be doing something stupid. I
can get into windows by getting rid of config.sys.

Config.sys is here:

device=C:\WINDOWS\himem.sys /testmem:eek:ff
device=c:\windows\emm386.exe /noems
device=btcdrom.sys /D:mscd001
device=aspicd.sys /D:mscd001

files=60
buffers=30
dos=high,umb
stacks=9,256
devicehigh=C:\WINDOWS\ramdrive.sys /E 2048
lastdrive=z

Does any of this use so much memory? Is any of it bad? I don't
remember why I have those two mscd001 lines.

Surely some of the lines are worth having? :)

I havent been using dos much lately, but I used to use it all the time
and want to go back to using it.

Thanks.

If you are inclined to email me
for some reason, remove NOPSAM :)

Windows 9x isn't designed to use more than 1GB RAM. What you see can be
one of the symptoms of having more tham 1GB RAM installed in the
machine. The cure is to remove the extra 512MB of RAM or to use the
MaxPhysPage entry in the [386Enh] section to limit the available RAM to
1GB or less.

It looks like you may have two CDrom drives.

The MaxFileCache=524288 line is very important when using over 512MB of ram.
Even if you decide to run with only 1GB of ram, you need to keep that line.
You could try removing the /noems in the
Device=C:\Wndows\EMM386.exe/noems line and try again.
When I try altering the Config.sys, I usually just rem out the line I'm
changing and add the new one.
That way, if it doesn't help, I don't have to try to remember what the old
line said. I just delete the added line and remove the rem . (ex: rem
Device=C:\Wndows\EMM386.exe/noems ).
Also,try adding the line DOS=HIGH,UMB right below the himen.sys line.
You can always go back and remove it, if it doesn't help
Make notes of any changes so that you can go back and properly undo them.
You can also go into msconfig and set it to not use the Autoexec.bat and
Config.Sys at bootup. Win98 doesn't really need those files to operate.

Some info on Autoexec.bat and Config.sys here:
http://www.computerhope.com/ac.htm

Many Win98 systems will not boot with 1.5 GB or more of ram. Obviously,
yours will with 1.5GBs.

Hopefully someone will respond to help you more. (some of the 'old' MVP's
are pretty sharp on this issue).

Try putting a rem in front of lasdrive=z also.
( rem lastdrive=z )
When adding rem , leave a space between it and the command.
Rem means remark and will prevent the line from being recognized.

I thought that would fix everything. A bunch of webpages and
groups.google pages seem to say so.

OK.

OK

It's further down. Does location matter?

I should have said win98SE. I did that once before. I'm so sorry.
I've been reading a lot of things lately that don't distinguish
between SE and FE, but I should know better. Maybe that's what makes
the difference.

OK, I used to need that but I don't use it now.

Thanks

Thanks for the reply.

I think I'd rather skip the config.sys and autoexec.

I should have said win98SE. I actually thought about specifying the
OS and then thought, "Well in this group it's presumed it's win98",
but I forgot about the difference between SE and FE. :(

So if I don't have the config.sys file, or if I take out these two
lines, that just means I can't use the CD roms in DOS, right?

So I can rem them out and if I need to reinstall windows or something,
I can unrem them back in, right?

These probably use as much memory as anything else in the config.sys.

Well, I know myself, and without a pretty sure bet, it's going to take
me a week or two to get around to this kind of trial and error. I
don't object to it, but the system is working pretty well, so it's
going to take spare time to get me going. And I'm leaving in two
weeks for my first big trip in 17 years, vacation and if I'm lucky,
work. I have to talk them into the job. So it will probably be 3
months before I can give any followup on this matter. Sorry.

Right now I'm down to 1gig, because when I was having trouble, I took
out 512M. That was before I read the artciles, and indeed, it didn't
help to go down to 1gig, so I'll put it back sometime in the next few
days. I'm enjoying seeing how much improvement another half gig gives
me, and when I'm done with that, I'll put the other simm back in.
Maybe before the trip, maybe not.

I think I'm going to have a friend come in and start the computer
every couple weeks and download the email. In the past I've had use
of a computer on 1 week vacations, but this is 3 to 8 weeks and I
won't have a computer unless I get that job.

Not sure, it's just something I seemed to remember from some time ago.
Since your computer boots when not using the Config.sys , perhaps you might
want to try rem 'ing out different lines to see which one may be causing
the problem.
