Migrate Server 2008 R2 Standard to 2016 Standard

From what I have read online, I should be able to upgrade our old aging 2008 R2 server over to our new 2016 server. I am planning on running it in Hyper-V. I am looking to do an in-place upgrade, and from what I've read, I will need to upgrade to Server 2012 before I can upgrade it to 2016. Is there a way to do this without purchasing a licence for 2012? Thank you for any help you can provide.
