DWM.EXE - Bad Image SOLUTION

After installing an old game on Steam (Fallout 3) recently (Oct 2018) on my Windows 7 Ultimate computer I got an error message, which repeats every time I boot the computer. The error was DWM.EXE - Bad Image. Then it detailed that the file C:\Windows\System32\d3d10_1.dll was not designed for my version of Windows or contained an error. I checked and the file had 0 bytes, indicating it had been damaged. This prevented me from using the Aero desktop interface, but did not affect much else.

SFC /scannow had no effect (CBS error log). I also tried using my Windows 7 Ultimate disk for a repair upgrade (error: trying to install older version).

Windows does not like people messing with its files, so my solution was pretty simple. I took ownership of d3d10_1.dll. To do this, right click on the file and go to the bottom of the menu and select "properties". Then click on the "Security" tab. At the bottom select "Advanced". Then click on the "Owner" tab. Then select yourself (usually the log on name is administrator). Then go back to the Permissions window and give yourself full access to the file. Once you have done this you can delete the bad file. Then it was a simple task to copy the same file from another Windows 7 computer (in this case, Windows 7 Pro, and the file worked just fine). You should change permissions back so that only the system has full control over d3d10_1.dll after you are done.

This fixed my problem completely and no other problems seem to be present. This was a lot quicker, easier and safer than trying to do an upgrade repair/install.
