Hi all,
Recently a laptop running Win7 Premium (64-bit) has begun to misbehave in a strange way: its DHCP configured IP address is continually changing - and by "continually" I mean every 30-40 minutes, when the DHCP lease time is 24 hours.
The DHCP server is a Netgear 4500v3 SOHO router, but I am confident the router is working properly because I have other DHCP configured devices - a couple of laptops, a couple of tablets, a smart phone, and even some VMware VMs - but only this one Win7 machine is doing this.
It doesn't matter whether the laptop connects by WiFi or is plugged directly into the router - the behavior is the same: the IP address changes every 30-40 minutes [with a DHCP lease noted in the router log], and if left connected the laptop will just keep walking its way around the entire pool of dynamic addresses.
I have already tried running network diagnostics [multiple times], checking the device drivers are latest and hardware is not being turned on/off for power saving. I've also tried a bunch of ipconfig and netsh commands recommended to "reset" the various workings of the network stack.
The network stack "reset" script I put together is too long to post, but it is available here:
My Cloud
I'm pretty confident that reinstalling Windows will fix the problem - the laptop has worked for more than a year with this router and without problems - but is there something less drastic to try first? Reinstalling is a PITA that will chew up the better part of a weekend.
Thanks,
George
