Vista very "touchy" on laptops??

P

petro

Ever since I loaded Vista on my lap top it has become very touchy. I can be
typing and all of a sudden it will bounce to a new window. It is almost as if
the slightest pressure on the lower part of the lap top (where your wrists
rest) activates the mouse to do whatever function the cursor is near. Am I
imagining this or is this something related to Vista? I don't remember this
happened when the laptop had XP

This sounds very much like a hardware problem.
Since you are not pressing a key, there is little possibility the
operating system is responsible.
Have you entered the BIOS to see if it can be duplicated.
Can you determine a specific spot and pressure required to repeat the
effect?

Check your Laptop maker's site for new drivers and program updates.
Also check BIOS in case you have Keyboard Sensitivity settings (would
be unusual in a laptop),

When you boot up it says on screen before windows loads something
like Press F2 to enter settings.... maker's website probably has
examples. What brand/model laptop?

Basic Input Output System. The first thing your computer reads when you
hit the On button. Don't worry about it. That's not your problem.

Well gateway has a site to show you how to do all of this.

What is BIOS?

http://computer.howstuffworks.com/bios.htm

In addition to that, when you install the computer Operating System on the
laptop, like Windows Vista, you must check with the manufacturer's site
(Gateway) to see if there any software that needs to be installed on the
computer that is specific to the manufacturer's make and model of the
computer based on the O/S that's running on the computer.

You need to go to the Gateway site and download drivers that may be needed
for the computer to function properly, based on the make and model of the
computer and the O/S that's running on the computer.

Laptops usually have lots of specialised hardware, customised by the
manufacturer to make the laptop smaller/faster/more featureful. So, it's
especially important to make sure you have the right device drivers
installed. This is much more important on laptops than on desktop machines
(which tend to be more standard). You need device drivers which match up
your hardware to the operating system.

Go to the website of yor laptop's manufacturer, and look up the downloads
for your specific modeil. You'll find there are a bunch of specifc Vista
drivers, for you to download and install. That will fix many of the problems
you're seeing.

Hope it helps, good luck!

It sounds like the driver for your mouse touchpad is too sensitive. I have a
Synaptics touchpad on my laptop. I have the same problem. Even a shirt
sleeve touching the pad would make the cursor jump to a new spot. I normally
disable it and use an external mouse any way so it didn't bother me that
much. See if your laptop manufacturer has a newer driver for the touchpad.
Look in the mouse settings in the Control Panel to see if you can adjust the
sensitivity of the touchpad.

Andrew is right here. I has to download and install all Vista drivers from
Medion for my laptop. This is normal because all system an a computer need
drivers, even you mouse. The process is usually explained at you laptop
makers site.

I went into the control panel to check the mouse setting and it seems to only
apply to external mice. Is there specific terminology referring to the mouse
pad that I am not aware of?

Do what Andrew McLaren told you. Since you installed Vista on your
laptop (it didn't come preinstalled), you must install all the drivers
for all your hardware. This will include your motherboard, sound, audio,
network, and yes - your touchpad. Many laptop mftrs. also have
laptop-specific software like power management.

You need to get and install all of this for your specific model laptop
and you need to get the files only from Gateway.

I agree with Andrew and Malke. It sounds like you have not loaded all the
proper drivers for Vista. Go to Gateway's site, download and install the
Vista drivers.
