Computer is on but screen is black - shutting down hard doesn't help

Please help.

I have an Acer desktop computer on which I am running Windows 8 or 8.1 (can't remember). I had the computer on but inactive for a couple of hours and when I returned the screen was black. Normally, it turns on again if I press the mouse key or enter, but now the computer starts up again but the screen stays black. I've disconnected the screen and tried it connected to another computer and it works. It just doesn't get any signal from my desktop.

I've tried to shutdown the computer hard by pressing the start button for a long time. The computer stops but when I restart the computer goes back to the same mode, being on but no signal to the screen, which continues to stay black. If I stop the computer hard, unplug it from the power, plug it back in again, the computer starts immediately with the same results, which leads me to believe it actually never stops, only hibernates. What should I do?

I've had similar problems in the past but the screen always got signal after trying to shutdown hard a couple of times. But now no.

I don't have the Windows 8 start CD.

I would like to be able to shut the computer down properly but since I can't see anything on the screen, how do I do? I've tried to do WIN+ various combinations but not succeeded.

I would also want to try to start the computer in safe mode or self test mode (whatever that is called) but I don't know how I can invoke that when I start the computer by pressing the start button and not having any screen.

Please help.
