After trying to make Windows Server 2016 Essentials work for me as a simple web server without Active Directory, I've concluded that its just not worth the trouble of trying to make Active Directory play nice with SQL Server.
1 - I already paid $500 for Windows Server 2016 Essentials (shame on me for not doing better research); is there an upgrade that I can buy to upgrade it to Standard, or must I pay the full $700 for Standard?
2 - IF I have to pay $700 for full install instead of upgrading, what would the value be of selling my copy of Essentials? I have the original disk with the serial number all in the original retail packaging and if I do have to buy Standard instead of upgrading, I'd sure like to recoup at least some of my money back for Essentials. I just don't know what it would be realistically worth.
3 - The role of this server is to simply serve web pages (a .asp based forum) that I'll administer with RDP. Will I also need to purchase a CAL if this is the only function that it serves?
4 - For my needs, I wish that I had just stayed with Windows Server 2008 R2, but while I have my original 2008 Server R2 key, I no longer have the software. Microsoft still has the evaluation .iso for download. If I install the evaluation version onto my server and enter my valid 2008 R2 key, will it function? If not, how can I get a copy of 2008 R2 that will accept my valid 2008 R2 key?
5 - Is there a retail version of Windows Server 2008 Web or Standard version available for purchase anywhere from a credible source? I realize that support is ending but this is just a web server for an enthusiast forum and I can't imagine it being the target for hackers as there is no financial incentive.
Thanks much,
Nathan In Montana
