I'm attempting to upgrade Server 2012 R2 to Server 2016 and keep my apps, files, etc. but keep running into roadblocks. When I try to upgrade from within a running instance, I receive a message that says " Your files, apps and settings can't be kept because you're installing an edition of Windows that's different than the one you're currently using". When I attempt to boot from the ISO, I get to a point where I get a 'Compatibility Report' that states "The computer started using the Windows installation media. Remove the installation media and restart your computer so that Windows starts normally. Then, insert the installation media and restart the upgrade. (Do not select [Custom (advanced)] to perform an upgrade. [Custom (advanced)] installs a new copy of Windows and deleted your programs and settings.)". I am not afforded an option when I run setup from within the OS and I keep getting the first message. From what I've read, I should be able to upgrade and keep my apps, etc. so what am I missing?
Thank you.
