Now that is still unknown unfortunately and those that may know have been
told to keep their mouths shut. Maybe someone will come along and talk
about it.

I think you are asking if MS will charge us money for SP1 when it comes
out. I'm sure they will not. They have not charged for service packs in
the past and I'm sure they won't this time. It would incite a riot if
they tried -)

MSFT have never charged for updates have they? All SP1 will be is a large
update! Same exactly as it was for XP SP1/1a and SP2.

Apple, on the other hand, DO charge for what are, effectively, service
packs.

Microsoft has not charged for updates or Service Packs in the past and
there is no indication that will change.
The Beta is expected soon with the final release rumored to coincide
with the release of Windows Server 2008 later this year or early next
year.

As for the Beta, You should not install the Beta unless you are
prepared for complete data loss and the need to perform a Clean
Installation of Windows to resolve any issues.
While that is the extreme and rare, it is part of the nature of Beta.
This applies to Beta anything from any source, not just Microsoft.

Hi Peter,

I'm sorry but I don't understand the point of your post. Would you
please explain?

Read Jupiter Jones answer farther up. Microsoft have never charged for
updates or service packs. What I was saying is that a service pack is
nothing more than a large update in reality.

OK...thanks Peter.

Yes people often think it important to get these SPs but they are just a
collection of all the previous updates in one pack, Sometimes they contain
real improvements so are worth having especially if your updating process
has been interrupted. You can usually buy a CD from MS of each SP.

Ian
For many regions the Service Packs have been free, no S/H cost.
Windows XP SP-1 and 2 were initially free for about a year and for at
least a short time there was a cost for shipping.

There is usually something in the Service pack that is not available
another way.
IIRC, "Set Program Access Defaults" in Windows XP was that way.
