Search indexer

[Steve]

Just recently I started to get an error on boot up "Microsoft Search Indexer
has stopped working". When I run 'check online for solution' it runs for a
bit then disappears.

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: APPCRASH

Application Timestamp: 4549b667
Fault Module Name: ntdll.dll

Going to indexing option shows the indexing is not running. 'Modify' and
'Advanced' are greyed out.

How do I correct this problem? More importantly what are the consequence of
not having the indexer running?

Hi Steve,

Your "Windows Search" Service may be stopped or disabled. Indexing is
just a quick search feature. It will not effect how the regular
thorough Search feature functions. Take a look at this link for details
on starting or enabling the service.

Still would not start, it tried to start then failed.
Since it is not a performance issue, and do very little searches I will not
let it worry me.
I will just disable it.

Ok Steve,

I have just one more thing for you to try if you want to. Try deleting
the Indexing Folder, it may have gotten corrupted. This should reset
it. First, stop and disable the Indexing Service (Windows Search),
then:

1. Open Folder Options. (Control Panel or Tools menu in Explorer)
2. Check "Show hidden files and folders" and click OK.
3. Go to: "C:\ProgramData\Microsoft" and open the folder.
4. In Microsoft folder, right click the "Search" folder and click
Delete.
5. Click Yes for the confirmation prompt.
6. Click Continue for "Access Denied" prompt.
7. Click Continue for UAC prompt.
8. Close Window.

Now enable Indexing to see if it will work right now.
