Intermittent Remote Desktop Connection Problems

Hello everyone and thanks for the help in advance. I am having problems using Remote Destop to connect to a stand alone Windows Server 2012. The connection has worked fine for a few years, but recently, I have started to have intermittent problems connecting to the server. I am using the IP address of the server to connect. The error messages are either an internal error occurred or unable to connect to remote server. The only error I see in the event logs is "Failed to schedule Software Protection service for re-start at 2119-02-03T22:48:30Z. Error Code: 0x80041316." I don't think this is related to the remote desktop problem. Any help would be appreciated.
