Official upgrade path to Windows 2003 standard to R2?

I need to upgrade a couple of live windows 2003 standard edition
servers to R2 so I can use DFS replication. I have contacted our
software supplier to ask them how much an upgrade is but they say it
isn't available as an upgrade. Is it possible to do this and what is
the licencing situation. Do I need to buy a Win 2003 server R2 full
licence to upgrade the licence Windows 2003 server standard I have
already got. Seems a bit of a crazy way to do it.

A couple of posters on here say it is possible to upgrade 2003
standard but you need to have the right R2 version to go with your
installation (retail, volume licencing, MSDN). How do i go about
checking what version I am actually running on the server. I have got
a licence but when i sent the media down to the datacentre I think
they ended up using different media as the one I sent did not boot for
some weird reason.

Any tips gratefully received

Hey,

I was in the same boat and I was told that you need to purchase a brand new
OS to get the R2 functionality. It is not avail as an upgrade.

However if you have multiple copies to be used with R2, try calling up MS's
sales.
