Windows xp activation

I bought a genuine windows xp instalation disk and did not know you had to activate it. I put it into my computer and states following the steps it told me to take. Now my computer is stuck on the home screen without any icons and wont let me do anything at all. It tells me i must first activate the disk. I have the product key and the proof of license
