Can1709 be promoted to replace 2003 AD server

Hi,

There seems to be lots of conflicting information around. Win2k16 has deprecated FRS. Can a Win2k16 server join a Windows 2003 domain and use the Win2k16 server to upgrade the domain replication to DFS Replication (to allow the objects to replicate the the Win2k16 server) before promoting the Win2k16 server and getting rid of the Win2k3 server?

Or does the domain have to be rebuilt from scratch?
