I had three Groove Music pass cards, worth $300, when the service was retired by Microsoft. At that time I contacted Microsoft customer support and with the value was eventually transferred to my Microsoft account. What they did not tell me was that the money would expire and only when I later looked at my account online did I see that the money would expire after one year.
A few days before the balance was to expire I tried to apply the money to purchase a Surface Go, but the site would not let me. The day before the amount was set to expire I contacted customer support and was told that the money could only be used for downloadable content. That was not disclosed to me when the amount was added to the account. I do not purchase much downloadable content so the prospect of purchasing $300 of books, games, and other software was totally unrealistic.
To further complicate the situation the balance expired that day even though per my account page it was set to expire the next day. Support explained to me that Microsoft expires at the Midnight of the day and not the end of the day as most reasonable people would expect. When I explained that it was not midnight in my location, yet, they further explained that it expires midnight UTC time. Expecting a consumer to know that is totally unrealistic!
I asked customer support how I could escalate this to a higher level, but the support person told me there is no escalation path for this issue!
So at this point I’m out the $300 dollars I spent on the gift cards and I have no way to get to someone at Microsoft to help me rectify this issue. Any help as to how I can get this rectified would be greatly appreciated.
