Installing Windows XP on an older computer with no operating system

I have recently purchased an older Gateway laptop that had Vista on it. The hard drive has been wiped and it now has no operating system on it. I want to install Windows XP on it as a new installation not a reinstall. Can it be done without any problems? I realize that there is always the chance for problems
