screen brightness

i have tried several times adjusting the screen brightness of my emachinese525 laptop but failed in vain!! i have tried the fn key function, have tried to go to power options but cannot find the screen brightness option. windows mobility has got the brightness option but when i try to adjust, the scale/ line moves but the brightness remains like before. your help will be highly appreciated
