I am having trouble with a file when my computer starts up. It is:

C:\>:\windows.asp4doc.com

is this an easy fix?

Probably yes: locate in C:\ root drive
AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS
and rename them to
XAUTOEXEC.BAT and XCONFIG.SYS
and reboot.

(These two MS-DOS startup files are "legacies"
from Win95. Win98 does not need or use them.
So DOS error messages may be irrelevant.)

Next time you post with a query about an error
message
1. Give the error message verbatim as it appears
on your screen. E.g. DOS error messages include
"Bad Command" but not "Bad File."
2. Identify the functional problem (if any). It is
important to know whether the PC starts Win98
and runs OK after an error message. (This
often happens, which is the main clue to how to
prevent non-functional error messages.)

I believe what you're seeing is an error related to asp4dos.com, not
*doc.com.

The file is related Aureal sound devices. Aureal is no longer in business.
To correct the actual error:

Search the Internet for the 1189 complete driver [w9x1189_full.exe]. Then
install the a3ddrivers312.exe update. These are the generic drivers for the
various Aureal cards. One aspect though, the 3.0 chip version may need
specific drivers as these were designed by individual manufacturers. So if
you would post the present sound device from Device Manager, perhaps you can
be directed to the proper files for those cards if necessary.

After installing these two files, check for the actual sound device in
Device Manager, as there may be one additional update for specific cards.

As a temporary fix, you can do as Don suggested, however, the autoexec.bat
may contain other needed aspects within it. So post the contents so they may
be reviewed. The config.sys may also contain needed aspects depending upon
how old certain devices are in your system, so a post of that would be
prudent as well.

ADDITION:

In Device Manager you should find a Multi Function Device - showing the
Aureal PCI device.

Post both the infrmation shown for the Multi device and the Sound Device -
PCI

Please repost with more information, including why you think
there is a problem with the file and any error messages being
displayed.
