Why don't my date and time stay in memory?

P

Phil James

I have an IBM ThinkPad A20m running W98SE which has been working just fine
since I got it in 2000. We took it with us in or motor home for a 4-month
trip from which we recently returned. The computer was well-cushioned in a
bag in one of our cabinets. We didn't actually use it on the trip, so it
just sat in its cushioned cocoon for 4 months.

When I started it up after we got home, it went to the configuration screen
and asked me to reset the date and time. I did so, and Windows 98 started
everything worked normally.

Next time I started it up the same thing happened, as it has each time
since.

Why isn't the date and time going to memory and residing there like it
always does? How do I get it to do that again?

7 years old? - It's probably ready for a replacement CMOS battery (which
maintains the clock). See your User Handbook and also here for a typical
example :-

Just in case very basic I know. Have you got the Time Zone (GMT
Greenwich Mean Time: Dublin, Edinburgh, Lisbon, London selected in the
drop-down menu? Also, are you saving your work by pressing OK?

Thanks all.

The Geek Squad says the battery is attached to the motherboard so I should
have someone with skills and experience (like them) replace it. And here I
thought it might just plug in somewhere!
