Computer won't recognize external DVD RW drive

Of course I'm one of the many who can't afford a new computer and I still have XP. I got an LG external DVD rewriter and have been using it in preparation for a legal problem. All of a sudden, the computer won't acknowledge its existence. This happened in the middle of a write and I've run many tests and diagnostics, followed many answers on Microsoft web site but I can't get an answer. HELP!
