Lost emails after OE6 compacted

I lost a large number of Sent Items following a compacting procedure. I located the bak folder and saved it to desktop as a dbx folder (and copied to a doument folder) but I am unable to import that file using the OE6 import route for store folders. It says close OE but the path to store folders is from tools in OE so that has to be open. There must be a way to paste the folder into sent items or a new OE folder?
